Rosemary Kratschmar - Certificate in Advocacy
When Rosemary Kratschmar joined Family Carers Ireland (FCI) more than 20 years ago, she became part of a community that would support her and her son Sammy through campaigns, advocacy and practical guidance. Over the years, FCI has played a vital role in lobbying government departments, improving conditions for carers and providing a one-stop support network for families across Ireland.
It was through FCI that Rosemary first heard about SETU’s Certificate in Advocacy. After receiving further details from Nicola in SETU, she decided to enrol in October 2024. Before long, she was attending her induction session and beginning a new chapter as a student.
A New Perspective
For Rosemary, the course offered something deeply valuable — the opportunity to enhance her knowledge and develop new skills.
“This course helped me step back and see things more clearly. It encouraged me to explore new approaches to advocacy and find better ways to achieve positive outcomes for those we care for.”
“As carers, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily responsibilities of supporting our loved ones,” she explains. “Although we constantly strive to improve their lives, this course helped me see that more clearly.”
Removing Barriers
Two key factors made the experience possible.
The course was fully funded. For many carers, earning capacity is reduced and finances can be limited due to the demands of full-time caring. Having access to a funded programme removed a major barrier and opened up a new trajectory.

The course was delivered online, allowing carers across the country to participate with minimal disruption to their daily responsibilities. This accessibility enabled many, who might otherwise have been unable to attend, to benefit from the learning, support and connection the course provides.
More Than a Course
For Rosemary, becoming a student was transformative in unexpected ways.
Receiving her student card was a particularly meaningful moment.
“For once, I wasn’t just a mother, wife or carer — I was a student in my own right.”
“I truly enjoyed the small perks too, like getting reductions on new shoes — and who doesn’t love a bargain?” she adds.
Throughout the programme, she found strong support from both SETU and Family Carers Ireland. Reflecting on her experience, she hopes the collaboration continues to grow, giving more carers the opportunity to learn, develop new skills and invest in themselves.
